Roz heard the phone while she was in the garden playing with Butler. She hurtled into the kitchen, took a deep breath and picked up the receiver.

‘Hello,’ she said hesitantly.

‘Hi there,’ a deep American voice replied. ‘I guess you must be Roz. It’s Drew Berry here from The Honey Bees in San Francisco.’

‘Oh, Drew, how wonderful to hear from you. I thought you may be my agent, I’m so glad you aren’t.’

‘Well, sweetie, I feel a little offended, I’m sure I would make a great agent.’

‘I’m sure you would too,’ Roz laughed. ‘Better than mine probably, no, actually that’s not fair, my agent is a lovely lady and has looked after me very well for many years.’

‘So why don’t you want to speak to her?’

‘Because I’m going to have to tell her that I’m turning down a job I’ve just been offered. In fact I’m going to have to tell her that I may be about to turn my back on my whole acting career and it’s not going to be an easy conversation.’

‘And why are you turning your back on your acting career?’

‘Drew, I’m not really sure. It just doesn’t feel like something I want to do right now, but I’m not really sure what it is I do want to do and I’m not really sure how to explain that to my agent.’

‘Why do you have to explain yourself, Roz? It’s your life, it’s your decision and if you don’t want to do it then you don’t have to do it.’

‘You sound just like Jamie. It must be a man thing, you make it sound so simple whereas I agonise for hours over it.’

‘If your mind is made up, then there’s no point in agonising.’

‘That’s the trouble, you see, I think that my mind is made up, in fact I’m almost sure, but then I think that maybe I should give it one more shot. Jamie wants us to go to Los Angeles, I was offered a part in a film there once and he thinks I should see if anyone remembers me.’

‘If that’s gonna help clarify your decision then go with that. You only live life once, you gotta be sure to get the most out of it.’

‘I can see why Jamie always comes off the phone smiling, you’re a great person to talk to, Drew.’

‘He always comes off the phone smiling because he’s been drinking gin and tonic.’

‘Maybe that’s what I need right now, some Dutch courage before Jean rings.’

‘Always works for me,’ Drew smiled. ‘Is Jamie around, Roz?’

‘Drew, I’m so sorry. I’ve been rabbiting on about things that cannot possibly interest you, costing you an absolute fortune on the phone and, no, Jamie isn’t here. He’s with an architect looking around the village hall. Shall I get him to ring you back?’

‘It’s been a pleasure talking to you, Roz. You, your husband and your village fascinate me. Tell Jamie I’ll ring back another time. I was only phoning to chat and to see what the latest news was.
