Roz heard the phone while she was in the garden playing with Butler. She hurtled into the kitchen, took a deep breath and picked up the receiver.
âHello,â she said hesitantly.
âHi there,â a deep American voice replied. âI guess you must be Roz. Itâs Drew Berry here from The Honey Bees in San Francisco.â
âOh, Drew, how wonderful to hear from you. I thought you may be my agent, Iâm so glad you arenât.â
âWell, sweetie, I feel a little offended, Iâm sure I would make a great agent.â
âIâm sure you would too,â Roz laughed. âBetter than mine probably, no, actually thatâs not fair, my agent is a lovely lady and has looked after me very well for many years.â
âSo why donât you want to speak to her?â
âBecause Iâm going to have to tell her that Iâm turning down a job Iâve just been offered. In fact Iâm going to have to tell her that I may be about to turn my back on my whole acting career and itâs not going to be an easy conversation.â
âAnd why are you turning your back on your acting career?â
âDrew, Iâm not really sure. It just doesnât feel like something I want to do right now, but Iâm not really sure what it is I do want to do and Iâm not really sure how to explain that to my agent.â
âWhy do you have to explain yourself, Roz? Itâs your life, itâs your decision and if you donât want to do it then you donât have to do it.â
âYou sound just like Jamie. It must be a man thing, you make it sound so simple whereas I agonise for hours over it.â
âIf your mind is made up, then thereâs no point in agonising.â
âThatâs the trouble, you see, I think that my mind is made up, in fact Iâm almost sure, but then I think that maybe I should give it one more shot. Jamie wants us to go to Los Angeles, I was offered a part in a film there once and he thinks I should see if anyone remembers me.â
âIf thatâs gonna help clarify your decision then go with that. You only live life once, you gotta be sure to get the most out of it.â
âI can see why Jamie always comes off the phone smiling, youâre a great person to talk to, Drew.â
âHe always comes off the phone smiling because heâs been drinking gin and tonic.â
âMaybe thatâs what I need right now, some Dutch courage before Jean rings.â
âAlways works for me,â Drew smiled. âIs Jamie around, Roz?â
âDrew, Iâm so sorry. Iâve been rabbiting on about things that cannot possibly interest you, costing you an absolute fortune on the phone and, no, Jamie isnât here. Heâs with an architect looking around the village hall. Shall I get him to ring you back?â
âItâs been a pleasure talking to you, Roz. You, your husband and your village fascinate me. Tell Jamie Iâll ring back another time. I was only phoning to chat and to see what the latest news was.
